Michael becomes first principal

It was a special occasion when companions and guests of Bootle Chapter No 1473, gathered at Litherland Masonic Hall, to witness the installation of Michael

(Mike) Clarke, as their new first principal. For the installation the chapter was pleased and honoured to have the presence of Ian Cuerden, Assistant to the Provincial Grand Principals responsible for the Wigan and District, Preston and Leigh Groups as their principal guest.

Ian was accompanied by the Ormskirk and Bootle Group Chairman, Frank Umbers, group vice-chairman, Graham Chambers, with grand officers David McCormick, Roy Pyne and acting Provincial grand officers.

After the chapter was opened and initial business had been completed the director of ceremonies, David Sullivan announced that Ian Cuerden was without and seeks admission. Ian was then entered the temple in a procession, accompanied by Frank Umbers, Roy Pyne and the acting Provincial grand officers, Brian Griffiths, Peter Ledder and Mike Silver.

After Ian was warmly welcomed by the three principals to the chapter, the installation ceremony commenced with the second and third principals being temporary replaced for the ceremony. Derek Challinor continued as the first principal, with Russell Skidmore replacing Mike Clarke as second principal and Brian Meadows replacing Allan Hore as third principal.

Mike was then installed as the first principal by the outgoing first principal Derek and Simon Gray was then installed as second principal by Mike, with Simon then installing Allan back into the chair of the third principal.

The whole ceremony was under the expert direction of the chapter’s DC David Sullivan who carried out his duties with a high level of proficiency. The chapter was privileged to have Roy Pyne, a visitor to the chapter, delivering all three robe addresses in his usual faultless and confident manner. This was followed by the address to the first principal again proficiently delivered by Peter Whalley. After the appointment of the officers, the address was then given to the officers of the chapter by Russell Skidmore and was followed by the address to the companions of the chapter, which was delivered by Ian Cuerden, in a confident and superb manner.

At the conclusion of the ceremony Ian brought greetings on behalf of the Grand Superintendent Tony Harrison, congratulating the three principals and all the members of the chapter for the enjoyable ceremony. Ian proceeded to give congratulations to Derek the outgoing first principal and Dave Sullivan the DC for their work during the evening and also Roy for the robe addresses. Ian then thanked all the members of the chapter involved in the ceremony for their work that evening.

Following the convocation the members and guests retired to enjoy the delights of the friendly and jovial festive board. During the evening a raffle was held which raised £82 with the money being donated to charities at a later date.
